Medellín Marathon 2016

Posted on September 11, 2016July 18, 2019
Medellin Marathon in Colombia. Marathon #93, #29 year to date, 4th country, 4th continent. Mediocre time. Altitude and some seriously macerated feet from a rain storm before we started led to some ugly blisters. I can’t tell you how beautiful and kind the country and people are here. The marathon however is lackluster. Boring course on highways and less than stellar organization. Fun fact: 70% of the fresh cut flowers imported to the USA come from Colombia. 60% of those come from the Aburrá Valley where Medellín is situated.
More running on the road, here near a verdant hillside.
“Yes is for the FARC. No is for Colombia.” Sign for a plebecite to be held with regard to the peace negociations between the FARC and the Colombian government. The two factions have been fighting for 50 years. With ELN and FARC guerrillas setting up roadblocks and taking captives. Not so fun fact: In 2000 at least 3,572 people were taken captive. This number only reflects the number reported.

Not likely
Still more running on the road through a neighborood.
When the sun finally came out I was glad I had my sunscreen on. The Mountains in the distance.

They appeared to be using the military guards as turnstiles. I’m not sure I approve of asking people who risk their lives for you as props. Nor do I think it’s a great idea to have someone standing stationary at the start of a marathon.
Children play soccer alongside the course.
Ran into a Marathon Globetrotter, and chatted her up. One day I aspire to it. Unfortunately I need 5 countries to be a provisional member, and my next international marathon is in Germany, which I have already done.

You stay well-behaved, Medellin.
“Sácate la leche” indeed.
And I was so worried about sunscreen…
At the finish I was first shocked to see a man selling ciggarettes out of a trunk. “Not much chance in this crowd, mate” I thought. Then I realized the man next to him was smoking. Okay…Whatever.
A typical stretch of the race
