Marathon or longer #99, and #35 for the year at the Des Moines Marathon. It seems Kansas City took a bigger bite out of me than I had anticipated. The goal was 4:15, but 4:32 is what I turned in. I’m not happy with it, but I gave it what I had. I’ll have to make it work. 62 and foggy, I found myself drenched within the first few miles. I experimented with tailwind on this race, no significant difference from gu but for slight gassiness. The folks I saw but forgot to take a picture of (Tim Mullican, Ed Childress, Cade Remsberg, Severin family) Fun fact: 1970 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Norman Borlaug, a native Iowan, developed a high-yield wheat strain responsible for saving a billion plus lives from starvation. He helped to create the World Food Prize in Des Moines, which recognizes achievements in agricultural innovation.
Des Moines capital building. About 100 ounces of gold go into that dome, folks.
The only place I’ll catch David: the start corral, maybe at a pizza joint after.
Always with a smile on her face, Nadia Guimont
Gaby, ready for his second helping of marathon this weekend.
Tom, whooping my ass as usual.
Blurry fogtastic selfie with Kiran Singh
A Brazillion (note: I know it’s not a real word) maniacs and fanatics at the reunion. I didn’t bother with the special medal.
Race morning was a little humid.
A little bit for everyone: some forest, some park, some city, some track, some lake. Good stuff.
I can’t see this as anything other than a statics problem thanks to engineering school.
The musical acts are dying to get into the marathon.
Creepyish lake bridge.
Why would there not be a giant cow in the park?
Late in the race it was still foggy enough to obscure the Des Moines skyscraper.
So the last two weeks one candidate has been a consistent punchline on marathons in Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa. Just an observation. I’m sure they don’t feel that way all over the world. Not at all.
The column next to the capital building is the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ monument.
Artwork, it would seem, is appreciated by the Iowa judiciary.
