Glass City Marathon 2017

Posted on April 23, 2017July 26, 2019
Marathon #13 for calendar year 2017, and my 17th double or more at the Glass City Marathon in Toledo, Ohio. A nice suburban marathon on road and bike trail. Slightly chilly, well organized, pretty race, with some light roller hills. It has all the makings of a fast race. Today was an okay performance, a good 15 minutes faster than yesterday, but it’s time for some rest now. Fun fact: Ohio and Michigan have been at one another’s throats in more than just the Big 10. Back in 1835 due to poorly written federal legislation identifying state boundaries, both Ohio and Michigan claimed ownership over land known as the Toledo strip, which included present day Toledo. When Michigan’s 24 year old “Boy Governor” Mason filed for its statehood he tried to take the land by legislation. Congress resolved the matter by offering the land of what is now the Upper Peninsula in trade. The conflict was known as the Toledo war and its only casualty was a Monroe County deputy sheriff who was stabbed with a penknife.
Flyover by the Mercy Health (Title sponsor) chopper.
If you’re a first timer you get a special bib. That’s cute. It lets you know who’s going to make a hash of the water stations. 🙂
better than yesterday anyway…
Ken Fattmann, Calix has some major competition. I’m just sayin’, I own scotch older than this kid.
Loan O’Brien will be pleased to know when I caught the RWB eagles that the Coast Guard flag was leading the pack.
Cute little Toledo home
Another cute Tudor style home
Owens Corning. Glass City. Get it?
Wildwood Preserve
Sylvania really does not care for bicyclists. Apparently they’ll bomb you with Gary Ridgeway. Is that too much of a stretch? Green River killer, ordnance?
Little foofer on the course. Hi Corgie. I shall name you Dutchess.
Oh no, I’ve got a tail!

This covered bridge was a welcome distraction at mile 19 the remix
A booming redbud tree on the Wildwood Preserve, the historic Stranahan mansion.
Dearest race wife Amy Melissa Guimond, When you borrowed my watch, for the Carmel Half Marathon, race wife etiquette dictates you return it to it’s previous state, not leave me with 30 second interval timers. All day today, every thirty seconds: *chirp, chirp* I don’t know how Galloway people don’t go insane. I could only make so many jokes about needing to feed my Tamagatchi.
True story, also fast casual like Applebee’s, Chili’s, and the like.
The Glass Bowl at the University of Toledo.
State shaped medal number two for the weekend. The many colored bibs of the Glass City Marathon were red (marathon), yellow (first timer), green (5k), blue (relay), black (I don’t know), salmon (I made this up), and periwinkle (also made up because it has a funny sounding name), also a glass finishers mug that I have dropped once, and accidentally threw my medal at already. I’m a klutz. Only minor damage so far.
Not to scale as Doc Brown would say.
I am the worst vegetarian ever, but I have a soft spot for hot dogs, and I had to try Tony Packo’s. It was so so. I prefer a Chicago dog.
