Mount Dora Half Marathon 2017

Posted on December 17, 2017July 17, 2019

My first and only half marathon of the year at the Mount Dora Half in Mount Dora, Florida. A chilly (for Florida) hilly (for Florida) race through the cutesy downtown of Mount Dora and the lake home neighborhoods. The race is Christmas themed, and the town, which seems to derive a not insignificant amount of revenue from Yankee tourism this time of year, was supportive and I would do this race again. Speaking of, apparently there’s a jacket for 5x finishers for those of you so inclined. Random sighting: for a split second I thought I saw Dave Mari. Fun fact: In 2006 run Disney, division of the Walt Disney corporation responsible for road race events in the Walt Disney parks, separated the half marathon and marathon in Walt Disney World, which had historically been a single event. In so doing they created an opportunity whereby one could participate in a half marathon on Saturday and a marathon on Sunday. This would be called the Goofy Race and a Half Challenge, so named because one would have to be goofy to do so.

The Mayberry of Florida.
I need this hat.
The reindeer was the cutest.
Much of the race had views of the lake
A rare inland lighthouse.
Dan Roehler finishing. I probably should have been on the other side in retrospect.
Low light photography: an iPhone specialty. Imagine a Christmas wonderland.
Stilt walkers at the start
This is a town my mother would love, an Amish store.
Finish. So cute it’d make the grinch vomit.
The locals were going to dress up at some point, maybe later.
My second favorite Seth. I got to spend a couple of miles with him, a rare treat.
Again, better in person.
So the big inflatable Santa at the start. It’s cute but it creates a bottleneck at the very beginning of the race which is also up a hill. I would rethink that start if I were them. I wasn’t running for time so it hardly mattered to me.
The shirt. Now with antlers.
The medal with a snowman not quite spinner. More of a rotator.
Bib. A donut, seriously?!
