Reikjavík Marathon 2018

Posted on August 18, 2018July 23, 2019
Big, long thing (marathon or longer) 168, country 11, Iceland, at the Reykjavík Marathon done in 4:18, a decent performance for me. Small rolling hills around mostly coastal Reykjavík on roads and bike paths. Well supported by both the race officials and the local community. A beautiful day in a place that can be very temperamental, only some gusting wind which I welcomed to cool me off from the direct sunlight—a rarity for the northernmost capital city. Fun fact: Iceland instituted prohibition in 1915. It was repealed for red wine by 1925, spirits in the 1930s, and beer in 1989.
Former Floridians, now of Ireland, the Schwartzes and Larry Wasson.
Alexis gets in his race mindset.
Brian Wright, prerace—too fast for me to catch an action shot
Not a bad over the shoulder photo of the start of the marathon.
Laugardalsvöllur, the national football stadium.
Somewhere beyond the sea…
This one’s for Amy Guimond, 35/42km down, less than 5 miles to go. Fun fact: handball is Iceland’s national sport. Seriously.
Vincent Ma spotted out on the course today. 4 digits worth of marathons and an inspiration to us all if only to say “I’m not THAT nuts!”
French people are so strange.
Not exactly sure, but if they want to go to Kansas they’re going to need another.
Little waterfall in the park.
Shamelessly stolen photo of the harbor
Coastal homes in Reykjavík.
View of the city from a pedestrian flyover bridge.
Quiet day at the beach apparently. I guess when you’re 2 degrees below the arctic circle your beach days are pretty sparse.
Dan Ruiz on the run in his Globetrotter orange. Way to rep the club, Dan.
Team to End AIDS coach Jennifer Cheng in action.
Hard to beat this beautiful day.
Fish drying racks in the Seltjarnarnes, probably my fave part of the course.
Kinnier Lastimosa snaps a photo of me snapping a photo of him. It’s all very meta.
Shirt helpful modeled by a guy I don’t know.
Medal for those about that.
Bib is surprisingly reasonably sized for Europe.
