Providence Marathon 2019

Posted on May 5, 2019July 17, 2019
20th sub-4 hour marathon state complete today at a rainy Providence Marathon, in Providence, Rhode Island on Cinco De Mayo. Rolling hills through downtown Providence along the Seekonk and Providence Rivers with a fair piece on bike paths. VERY well supported (seriously I was offered gu at two different aide stations before the first 5k) with a lot of community out standing in the rain. It’s been almost 3 years since I managed a sub-4 in a new state because of injury, depression, weight, meds, et cetera so it was especially welcome considering I flew here without running shoes and I did the race in this ridiculous costume. I think I prefer this race to the Newport ones I did before. Fun fact: From 1776 to 1853 Rhode Island, our smallest state by land area, had 5 capitols that rotated (Providence, Newport, East Greenwich, South Kingston, and Bristol) in 1853 they cut it down to the first two, and finally in 1900 settled on just the one current capital, Providence.

View along the Seekonk. The art deco skyscraper in the distance is the abandoned Industrial National Bank Building known affectionately as the Superman building for its resemblance to the Daily Planet building from Superman. It is Rhode Island’s tallest building at 26 floors and appears on the medal for the race as well.
This place is a mystery machine shy of being a Scooby Doo episode

Thoroughly wet I was impressed the cheap sombrero I bought held up for 4 hours. I was hoping for coffee milk as a post race beverage, but this was inoffensive enough. The medal features the Superman Building.
