Martha’s Vineyard Marathon 2019

Posted on May 19, 2019July 19, 2019
Dan and Paula’s 50th State celebration at the Marthas Vineyard Marathon. Rarely in life do you meet people so devoted to offering kindness and grace to all, such is the case with Dan and Paula. I haven’t known them long, but they’re family to all that know them from the first meeting. It was my honor to share a little time with them for their achievement this weekend. As for the course, it’s in a beautiful part of the country but most of the course is bike paths too far from shore to see much other than McMansion “cottages.” Decent support though it could have used a few more portapotties, and calories were kind of hard to come by on the course, coupled with the logistical difficulties of getting here: fly, rent car, park car, take bus, take boat, take bus to start. I suspect I won’t be repeating this race, but it has the potential to be a very fast race in the right circumstances. Fun fact: directionality on the island is a bit different. East is Down-Island, West is Up-Island owing to their centuries as a shipping and whaling region.

Another fine example of instant family
Oops I cut Dan in half
The ferry at dawn
View of Woods Hole from the ferry
Most of the course was bike trail like this.
Fellow Floridian (but also Aussie) @[649922670:2048:Trent Morrow]. We were both supposed to be at Nashua this morning, but in a new first for me I missed a race because someone parked me in at my Airbnb (who arrives after 11pm, other than me?)
I had time to kill and it was a hot day, so I grabbed a dipped cone from the DQ on the course.
Toward the end we got a view of the sea
Mid-Race Coffee Break for the finishers and their entourage
Corgi on the prowl
This is someone’s idea of a “cottage” 🤷🏼‍♂️
You yell “Shark,” we’ve got a panic on our hands on the Fourth of July. Fun fact: Martha’s Vineyard was the actual filming location for Amity, the Long Island seaside town in Peter Benchley’s novel “Jaws”
Sun’s out, tongue’s out
So many banners this weekend.
More appreciative family
I’m not decent! Showering in an outdoor shower is a better idea when it’s not 60 outside
Whatcha got there?
Race shirt
Finisher beverage options included Prosecco #bougie
Bib. I had to fix the sticker
