Manitoba Marathon 2019

Posted on June 16, 2019July 19, 2019
Country 17 completed at the Manitoba marathon in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, a flat meandering course that seems to pass all the major landmarks in town and finishes in the University of Manitoba stadium (Go Bisons! Pedantic aside: Yes, I am aware that the plural of “Bison” is in fact “Bison”. It would seem that they are not.) Anyway, great community support on a cool, overcast day with a light sprinkle in the last hour. It seems the race is ordinarily quite warm and muggy, so there were a number of people handing out ice lollys and sponges. The race was pleasant, and well organized,if somewhat unremarkable. Fun fact: Winnipeg was the first city in the world to develop the 911 emergency number.
I didn’t have my camera ready for a photo of the legislature. Pretty fountain. Cupola. The whole schmear.
Hey there, handsome.
If you zoom in real close that’s Jan H. Steenkamp finishing. I was able to catch it just before I had to leave to catch my flight.
View from the Norwood Bridge.
It’s disturbing to be handed a little cup with branding for booze only to find out it’s water. Bah. I nearly choked.
Taiko drummers in the park.
Probably one of the best museums I’ve ever been to. The architecture, the design, the pedagogy. They covered nearly every conceivable marginalized group without falling into tokenism. They covered current major international crises like the genocide in Myanmar, and there is currently an exhibit on my birthday buddy Nelson Mandela that I found particularly timely. I cannot recommend this museum enough.
Missing and murdered indigenous women are all too common in Manitoba. Members of the indigenous community say that the Canadian justice system doesn’t take the threat to these women seriously enough.
Probably the most troubling thing about Winnipeg is that they have bought into bear propaganda. I would have thought people who live in close proximity to these killers would know better than to portray them as cuddly wuddly.
Why the long face, eh?
More bear propaganda!
Ah Canadians and their Drake.
This guys was at the expo talking about the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He said he had been undercover about a year ago, and it was a bitch to try to hide his horse.
The Start. Small race.
Part of the riverside greenway we ran on. I would best describe Winnipeg as like Peoria.
V is for volunteer. The other V is for Vuckin’ Awesome. Volunteers are Vuckin’ Amazing. Yay for volunteers!
The shirt is a cotton blend long sleeve free of adverts on the back.
Medal and post-race beverage. Canadian cows have beady eyes and flappin’ heads. Pass it on.
