Marathon #13 for calendar year 2017, and my 17th double or more at the Glass City Marathon in Toledo, Ohio. A nice suburban marathon on road and bike trail. Slightly chilly, well organized, pretty race, with some light roller hills. It has all the makings of a fast race. Today was an okay performance, a good 15 minutes faster than yesterday, but it’s time for some rest now. Fun fact: Ohio and Michigan have been at one another’s throats in more than just the Big 10. Back in 1835 due to poorly written federal legislation identifying state boundaries, both Ohio and Michigan claimed ownership over land known as the Toledo strip, which included present day Toledo. When Michigan’s 24 year old “Boy Governor” Mason filed for its statehood he tried to take the land by legislation. Congress resolved the matter by offering the land of what is now the Upper Peninsula in trade. The conflict was known as the Toledo war and its only casualty was a Monroe County deputy sheriff who was stabbed with a penknife.
