Please forgive while I brag on my childhood neighbor’s first marathon today at the Glass City Marathon in Toledo, Ohio. Joseph R. Elder somehow found time to train while working a more than full time job and raising two kids. Apparently he fell in with the wrong crowd on a Z Adventures cruise and caught the running bug, and today he’s a marathoner. I’m super proud of this guy! Fun fact: Yahtzee, originally Yatzie
Joe and I with celebratory beers.
I didn’t take a lot of pictures because I was focusing on my time, but I like this one.
Bonus fun fact: When the University of Toledo played then-powerful Carnegie Tech in football in 1923, Pittsburgh sports writers were surprised to learn that UT did not have a nickname. Though an underdog, Toledo fought formidably, recovering a series of embarrassing fumbles by favored Tech. Pittsburgh writers pressed a UT student working in the press box, to come up with a nickname. Despite UT’s 32-12 loss, the student labeled the team “Skyrockets,” obviously impressed by his alma mater’s flashy performance against a superior team.
Toledo has some major dog game
Canadian Fanatic Mike Bell and I chatted for a few miles. Apparently the Canadians are invading, and we have them bib number 1776?! Subtle.
Gronk looks smaller, more Jewish in person.
Jim Diego sang the American national anthem after some cute kids sang some song about being on guard for Canada. I guess maybe they’ll attack? Shrug?
I missed him the first time. His second sign was less funny.
Possibly the best marathon city I’ve ever been to for dogs.
Haven’t seen Sub4 since Chicago 2016. This year I’ve been injured, dropped to the half, had a pneumonia-induced DNF at Phoenix, my second slowest marathon ever at Bataan, and I’ve lost 3 months training for Keys 100 which begins in 4 weeks. At least I feel like I’m starting to get back into working order.
