“Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not who someone else is today.” It’s good advice. Like most good advice, it’s easier given than taken. I’m not entirely happy with my performance today at the Southernmost Marathon in Key West, but this is my second time doing it. In 2013 it was the third marathon I ever finished and I was a hot mess. Five years later, with the benefit of 167 more BLTs, I’m still a hot mess, but I finished about 45 minutes faster. So I’ll take a small victory, and keep fighting. The race runs from near Mallory Square down to the southern end of the island eastward to a turnaround on Boca Chica Key and returning to Key West along the north of the island to finish at the start. It is a cool 84 degrees and super flat. Well supported, but bring a headlamp for the 5:30 am start. Fun fact: There is basically no more production of Key Limes in the Keys at all.
