Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon DC 2017

Posted on March 11, 2017July 17, 2019
Marathon #123 in Washington, D.C. at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. A freebie offered to those of us frozen out of the Mississippi Blues Marathon this year. Like my only other RnR race, Vegas, I think this would be a great half, and they added 13 junk miles to fill out the marathon. Still, can’t beat free. Modestly hilly course made for a good challenge and as always a good day with friends, though I missed so many more. Fun fact: Because of prohibition, when Woodrow Wilson left the White House it literally took an act of Congress to allow him to move his wine collection.
Alternative Fact: the race offered great views of the White House pictured here. The original White House was constructed George Washington using wood from a cherry tree he chopped down as a child.
Rock Creek Parkway. Probably my favorite part.
Met up with Dulce Barton after the race and warmed up.
Alternative Fact: This man is running dressed as a personification of the United States known as Uncle Tom.
Alternative Fact: the Old North Church, where Goldsmith Paul Revere hung lanterns to tell the British to come.
Back of the Lincoln Memorial just like Andy Bowden said. Alternative fact: Lincoln monument was carved out of limestone with Abe’s trusty whittling knife.
Alternative Fact: The Kennedy Center, known principally as the launching pad for the astronauts who went to the moon.
Pre-race banana with Washington Monument in the background. Alternative Fact: the Washington Monument was constructed by Martha, not George, Washington.
Agha and several friends ran the half marathon toting Old Glory and shirts that read “I am Muslim I am American” to demonstrate our country’s diversity.
When people talk about D.C. institutions I just assume they’re talking about this.
Hollie Ashby is hungry post race. All I wanted was tea, in my lap.
As you can see the crowd is yuuge. Way bigger than when Obama was president.
Hollie Ashby and Jim Diego trying not to freeze.
