HUFF 50k 2018

Posted on December 29, 2018July 24, 2019
Lifetime Big, Long Thing (Marathon or longer) #181 completed at the Hoosier Ultra Frigid Fifty (50k) in Chain O’Lakes State Park in Albion, Indiana. A chilly but tolerable day for December in Northern Indiana (Overcast with a high of 31) made this two loop course with about 2300 feet of elevation gain a nice workout before spending time with my family. The foliage did however obscure a number of odd shaped rocks, roots, and slick spots, however I did not fall, so according to Kramer’s Law this is not a trail race. Fun, possibly factitious, fact: According to Wikipedia anyway, this race is the 12th largest ultramarathon in North America. I find this information very difficult to believe, nor can I find a citation. Proceed with extreme caution.
Pre-race warm up
This is not how I am accustomed to dressing for a race

Some of our beautiful forest surroundings
I tried to tell the volunteers you can’t just leave dog biscuits out like this. They absorb the moisture from the air and then they taste stale.
The kids in high school who did track generally prefer road races. The kids in high school who did cross country generally prefer trail races. Then there were the fat kids in high school, who now just pick races because the food and/or beer is good. I’ll let you decide which one of these I am. The highlight of this race is the soup afterwards (spicy corn chowder pictured here) also chocolates. And of course the dog biscuits.
There was a bridge running over this, this was not a repeat of 2011
There was a certain moisture component to the day
A barely frozen lake, not something I would see at home
I somehow managed to not get lost on the course, in the woods, me.
A race so local my family has an inside joke about the guy who supplies the Porta potty‘s
The bib with Chief Little Turtle, the mascot for the race
I do find a race shirt Uber sexy. Orange is my color. It makes me look like a pumpkin.
Cue the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments about a belt buckle for a 50 K. Apparently the belt buckle commemorates a moment from the previous year when someone proposed at the race. This is probably meaningful to the people involved, and possibly those who were in attendance last year, but to me it just makes this a weird heteronormative thing I’ll probably get rid of.
